December 8, 2015 Not a lot of time

Dear Family and Friends,

  We are just going to work. Robert is our only promising investigator. He's a good guy. He seems really interested. I don't have a lot of time to write this week. nothing is new. We got to help the Bishops family decorate for Christmas. We live with them. It's great. We did service at the California International Marathon, that was cool. I got a bunch of free stuff! Me and Elder Jones(not my companion but an elder in my district) went around to all the booths to find free stuff, it was sick.

 I love you guys! Miss you so much!

Ryan also sent the following in response to his grandpa (parentheses added for clarity)

yep weather is rainy and cold most of the time. but no not fun on bikes in the rain. That's crazy about the cyclone!(Referring to where his cousin Georgia is serving in the Philippines) Yeah the Christmas devo was great. I saw her too (referring to his aunt who sings in the Tabernacle Choir) and pointed her out to my district. yeah elder Christofferson's talk was my favorite. We love being at the bishops house because they decorate for Christmas and if we were in an apartment we wouldn't have decorations. 

He told his grandma:

Sacramento is great, the rain is off and on. We have a car but can only use 450 miles.

December 1, 2014 letter

Ryan sent the following letter today for his blog.  He had also mentioned to his dad that there had been a lot of rain which was good for the drought in California but not the greatest for riding bikes.

Dear Family and Friends, 

  Not much has happened since Thursday. All is well.  I have exchanges, that is where you switch companions for a day. I'm excited I'll be with Elder Wood who is a great guy. We see him and his comp Elder Jones a lot because they are in our district. 

   We have quite a few investigators.  None of them are progressing but we are still trying. The work seems slow here, hopefully it will pick up in the Christmas season.

Novembert 27, 2014 First post from Sacramento Mission

Dear Family and Friends, 

   I'm in Rancho Cordova, in the Goethe Park ward. Things are pretty great here. It has rained a bit here and looks like it's going to rain more which makes riding bikes really fun. The members are great. We live in the Bishop's house. That's pretty great. It's in the nice part of town. 

  We just had Thanksgiving with the Hart family, It was great! The food was fantastic. We had a good time. 

  My mission president is president Jardine. He seem like a nice guy. I haven't interacted with him much. 

  My companion is Elder Lewis. He's from San Antonio Texas. He's tall and lanky. He's nice. He's showing me the ropes. It'll take some getting used to.

Dear family and Friends, 

      On Wednesday I was reassigned to the Sacramento California mission. I will be leaving on Tuesday the 18th. Getting moved was a little hectic, but I'm all settled in now. I was hard leaving my district because we have all gotten so close. As a farewell my all the elders in my district wore my suspenders. We looked pretty fly. I'm going to miss them all so much. I'm looking forward to serving in Sacramento, I believe Davis is in my mission, which is where the Schetzels have family I think.

Note to Blog:

There has been an interesting change in Ryan’s mission assignment.  Due to a couple of medical concerns he has been reassigned to the California Sacramento Mission.  He will arrive there on Tuesday November 18^th.  The mission has been in touch with me so everything is ready when he gets there.  We all feel really good about this change and are excited for him.  He is happy about this change.  Until we have a more specific address, letters and packages can be sent to:

October 24, 2014

Dear family and friends, 

   This week has gone by so fast! Sunday was great, we had church and later in the day we went the the temple to walk around the grounds. After dinner we saw a video called " The character of Christ" by  Elder Bednar. It was an amazing. If you get the chance and its available i highly recommend it. 

    Almost every day is exactly the same. We have breakfast then 3 hours of class, then lunch after that we have 3 hours of study (personal, companion, language). Dinner and then we teach a fake investigator. Some times they switch it up and we teach then study.

   

    Yesterday I went to the Mexican consulate. That was like the second best day of my life. We rode the train, we ate a pizza at costco, we were around normal people, it was great to be in the real world for the day. Now I just need to wait 5 weeks to leave again. I might go crazy. They might send me to Mexico crazy. 

    On the plus side my Spanish is getting better. I almost don't look like a fool in class.

First Couple of Days

Dear family and friends,

    The flights over were good, I got a little sleep. I rode over with two other missionaries to the MTC. One was going to Panama and the other Brazil. When I got to the MTC I was given my books and then I put all my stuff in my room. After that I went to my first Spanish class. The second I walked in the room the teacher said something in spanish and all I could think was "oh crap!" Our next class was awful. It was a group of about 100 very green missionaries teaching an "investigator". My companion in the MTC is Elder Eves, he's a good guy. He's from Oregon also, near Medford. We're in a room with four other elders from our district, Elder Nay, Daines, Soubie, Vouhn. 

   The second day was a lot better. Still had no idea what was going on in Spanish class.

   Today is our prep day. When getting breakfast I ran into my cousin Zach Tolen. Yesterday I ran into a couple friends from West Salem. Later today we will go to the Temple. Then after diner we get to teach an investigator all in Spanish! Yay!!!
